What is SSL?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, which for many people means absolutely nothing… Essentially SSL is technology that makes your website secure and encrypted so any data customers share with your website from their contact info to credit card details are safe.

Website without SSL

Google Chrome now flags up websites without SSL. You may have seen a similar notice (Left) when browsing the web using Google Chrome and as you can see it would be off putting to anyone about to add their card details or address to the website. Even if you dont have any personnal data on your website a red warning triangle could put plenty of people off browsing your site. Since it is now the most used website browser most businesses with a website have taken note and installed SSL.

When you visit a website that’s encrypted with SSL you get a secure padlock in the browser window. This means that any information you share with this website is instantly safe from being accessed by hackers.

The image below is different browser options with a SSL certificate installed. Each one displays it slightly diffent. If you are thinking of adding an SSL certificate to ypur website, make sure it is compatible with all major browser platforms.

Websites with SSL

If you have a website and aren’t sure if you have SSL already just look at the website address. If it reads https:// you have an SSL certificate and if you see http:// (Without the ‘s’) you don’t have it. If the website is secure you should see the padlock too, which provides more information to the website user when clicked.

Is an SSL certificate good for SEO?

Having an SSL certificate has a positive effect on your search engine results and is now part of Google’s search ranking algorithm.

How do you get an SSL certificate?

Your website provider should be able to help install SSL to your website and with recent research showing over three quarters of website users leaving an unsecure site it is an investment for your business.

The price varies depending on levels of security and some SSL certificates come with warranty so if the worst happens and your website gets attacked you are insured, which would be worth it if you handle alot of personal and sensitive data.

Our SSL certificates renew annually with our hosting packages.
